Episode 4: Secret Service Agents

In the 4th message of our "Improve Our Serve" series we’re talking about what it looks like to be a secret service agent - not the kind that works in DC, but the kind of person who serves without a need for recognition. Today’s message from Pastor Lawrence Metzler reminds us that the motivation behind our serving is very important to God. Our “motivation” is the “why” behind our service – why do we do what we do?

Reflection Questions

1. What are some of the safety rules (beware!) that you grew up with or currently teach your kids?
2. Share the best “why?” question you ever heard from your kids.

Bible Study

1. As a group, read: Matthew 6:1-4; 6:5-6; and 6:16-18 out loud and then discuss: What is the safety rule Jesus is exposing in all three examples of the Matthew 6 passages?
2. What does Jesus call people who “serve” to be seen by men?  What exactly is a hypocrite? Have you ever heard someone say, “the church is full of hypocrites?” What are some examples of that?
3. True service is not about religious performance, it is about spiritual transformation. Based on that statement, what should be the “why” behind our service?

Application: Evaluate your private time with God. Is it your most exciting time of the day? Does it fulfill you more than the accolades of public praise? Do you even have a private time with God?
